In the early 1960s, two motorcycle racers, Ken Johnson and Norm McDonald (K&N), developed a groundbreaking new idea for an air filter that could work in dusty and dirty terrain. After experimenting with many types of filter media, they found that the combination of oiled cotton not only allowed the filter to trap dirt very effectively, but also allowed it to be washed and reused, and thus the original K&N air filter was born.
